A Complete 120-Page Recapture of TERRAIN Volume One (M! editorial note 2026-09-20)

A Complete 120-Page Recapture of TERRAIN, Volume One

The TERRAIN photograph–haiku collaboration was initiated in 2022 and completed in 2026, resulting in a twenty-volume edition. In this issue of M!, we reprint the complete Volume One.

In the early years of the collaboration, individual volumes were produced as books as soon as each set of fifty photograph–haiku pairs was completed. Six volumes were printed in this way, each in a 120-page hardcover edition. With their very small print runs, these early print-on-demand editions have now become rare items, sought after by book lovers and collectors, with some copies also held in libraries.

The twenty-volume edition was subsequently produced in the same 120-page format, but in softcover. These print-on-demand editions will remain available until sometime in 2027. A new edition is now being planned, focusing primarily on the photographs: the 1,000 photographs from the complete TERRAIN project will be gathered into three bonded volumes. This edition is not expected to be available until 2027.
